October 23-25 Story Hours

This week was all about the rhymes and rhythms! We clapped, tapped, shook, and shimmied our way through some great songs and stories!

Literacy/Developmental Skill: Musical rhythms and rhymes encourage spontaneous movement that strengthens the child's body and helps to develop sensory control.  Large movements, such as those in a knee bounce (such as "Trot, Trot to Boston), are called gross motor skills

This week we ready some rootin' tootin', get your legs movin' stories!

We pulled out our parachute, and we sang together to shake to the beat, shake slow, and shake fast! We love the parachute, but it's not just a toy! There are some great benefits to parachute play:

  • Develops a sense of rhythm
  • Learn how to follow directions
  • Promotes social interaction
  • Promotes cooperation
  • Strengthens muscles!
  • There is no competition--fun for all!
We hope you'll join us next week! If you celebrate Halloween, please feel free to dress in costume all three days! Our requests are that you do not wear masks or weapons.  We can't wait to see your costumes!

New Program--Tinker Lab!

If you love art, coding, building, friendly competition, and more, we have a fantastic new program opportunity at the Bremen Public Library!

Kids in grades 3-5 are invited to the Tinker Lab, Bremen Public Library's new makerspace/STEAM-type program.  Tinker Lab will meet from 4-5 P.M. on the third Monday of each month for the rest of the school year.

Registration is required and limited to 15 participants.  A parent or guardian must register their child by stopping by the Children's Department or by calling the library.

What will we be doing in Tinker Lab? This is a hands-on program where kids will get a chance to experiment, craft, invent, and challenge themselves and one another each month.  Here are some examples of what we will be trying out!

October 15-18 Story Hours

This week was all about patterns!

Literacy/Developmental Skill: Noticing patterns and relationships between objects is an aspect of mathematical thinking that children will use when they learn math in school.

We read some great books about size and relationships between the sizes of different animals. It's all about perspective!

This week, our Wiggle Worms got to work with color patterns as they made their pattern caterpillars! Want to make your own? Here is what they look like:

What you need:

pom poms
craft sticks
markers
glue

Simply color circles on the stick in a pattern, and have your little one match the color of pom poms to the colors on the stick and glue them on. Enjoy!

In Preschool Story Hour, we also read:

Actual Size
by Steve Jenkins

This week in Preschool Story Hour, we played with tangrams to match our shapes and colors to some great patterns.  At the end, the kids were able to design their own patterns!

Last week, in Preschool Story Hour, we had the kids use their imagination to make an undersea and city play area for our free play time.  They did amazing--and they asked to get them back out this week to play! I think we've created a weekly activity!

October 9-11 Story Hours

Welcome back! This week has been so fun in story hours, because we have really experimented with our imagination.  Children were given scarves for the duration of story hour so we could pretend to be the wind, the leaves, shaking animals out of the tree, and paintbrushes!

Literacy/Developmental Skill: imagination plays a critical role in problem solving and learning.  You can nurture your child's imagination by playing games.  For example, pretend that your colors scarves are leaves swirling down from a tree or laundry swaying on a clothesline on a gusty day.  Wave your scarves as the wind blows!

In our Preschool Story Hour, we had a few additions to our day!

Need an idea of an extension activity that goes along with this week's developmental theme? Here are some ideas:

  • Play dress up! See who your kids can turn into!
  • Tell stories together.  You start narrating and ask your kiddos for details, places to go, etc.
  • Find a box! Cut windows into it and it can be a house.  Make a steering wheel and your box becomes a car!
  • Cloud/Star-Gazing: Grab a blanket and head outside! Try to find shapes in the clouds, and make up your very own constellations.
  • Arts and Crafts: It doesn't take much to get kids excited about crafts.  Pinterest is chock-full of ideas, but really all you need are a few household items/recyclables and some imagination!
  • And I really like this article that gives you some detailed activities to do with your kids
  • Let them get bored--this is okay! Next time your child says "I'm so bored!" meet them with a challenge of creativity to see what they can come up with! You'll be surprised what new crafts or activities kids can think up themselves.

Lastly, I want to share with you our Goodbye Song.  This song is brand new this year, and there are a lot of words and motions to it, so if you ever need a refresher or are new to the song and want to learn it with your kids, here you go!

October 2-4 Story Hours

If you missed Story Hour last week, that's okay! Here is what we went over:

Literacy/Developmental Skill:
Children love being able to identify animals and imitate the sounds they make.  Identifying animals, matching each sound with an animal picture, and imitating animal sounds build children's knowledge of the world around them.  Even children who are not yet talking can make a cow sound!

Today, we learned a new song with counting and sign language called "Hearts and Kisses." You can see and practice this song below:

We read/played/acted out some great stories with lots of animals and animal noises!

This week, we spent the last bit of time with independent creative play.  We offered stuffed animals, puppets, shakers, music, puzzles, and more to encourage imagination, sharing, working together, vocabulary, and an overall great time!

In Preschool Story Hour, we added a few more books and activities!

We played a few games:

Zoo Activities for Preschoolers
We pretended to be all kinds of animals while we made our best animal noises! We also worked together to classify about 20 animals by how they move: Do they fly? Do they swim? Or do they walk?

Join us next week for our next skill!

New Beginnings

Welcome to Bremen Public Library's new blog for our kiddos and caregivers! I am excited to keep you up to date with the latest and greatest.

There are a few things you can expect from this blog:

  1. Book reviews
  2. What's new? (This could be programs or books!)
  3. Story hour information
  4. What's going on at the library
  5. Have a suggestion? Let me know!
To get started, I want to share one of my favorite picture books with you!

They All Saw a Cat by Brendan Wenzel

This book has fun illustrations that show how different people and animals see the same thing--a cat! What does a bee see? What does a mouse see? Follow this lovable cat on his trek to find out who else he encounters.  This Caldecott Honor book is sure to entertain!

Enjoy this reading of this very special book!
